Fun Facts About In-N-Out Burger

In-N-Out was always on top of my food list whenever I visited California growing up. When I eventually moved here, I grew to love them even more and found new ways to enjoy my favorite fast food burger… although, let’s be honest, there’s nothing fast about In-N-Out as drive-thru line-ups are long all day! When I heard that a book was going to be released, I pre-ordered mine and then finished reading it in 2 days. Now, not only do I love the food but I love the story and the heart behind this beloved burger joint. Here are some fun facts I learned from the book and from attending their 75th anniversary festival in Pomona, CA!

How many of these did you know?

1. The first In-N-Out opened on October 22, 1947 at 4:15pm and they sold 57 burgers.

2. The Pasadena Branch (Store #5) is the oldest store that’s still in its original location.

3. In-N-Out is California’s first drive-thru and first to have a two-way speaker.

4. Kids under 12 get free hot cocoa on rainy or snowy days.

5. Animal Style was created in Store #1 in 1961 and Animal Fries was created in Store #4 in 2002.

6. The replica of Store #1 was built in 2014 in Baldwin Park, CA

7. Have you tried these shake variations? Neapolitan, Black and White

8. There are Bible verses on:

Hamburger and Cheeseburger wrappers (Revelation 3:20
Double Double wrappers (Nahum 1:7
Milkshake cups (Proverbs 3:5
Christmas cups (Isaiah 9:6
Soda cups (John 3:16
Fry Boats (Proverbs 24:16
Coffee Cups (Luke 6:35)
Hot Cocoa Cups (John 13:34)

9. There is a pair of crossed palm trees at almost every location. The founder of In-N-Out wanted to choose a symbol that would set them apart. He took inspiration from the movie “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” where palm trees in the shape of a “W” marked the spot of the treasure but instead of a “W”, he decided his palm trees would be in the shape of an “X” to mark the spot of his own “treasure”.
